Rabies

Rabies is a deadly viral infection that attacks the central nervous system, affecting mammals, including humans.

It is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear, but it is 100% preventable with prompt medical care after potential exposure.

The virus is most commonly transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually via a bite or scratch.

Prevention and treatment

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): If an animal bite or scratch is suspected, immediate treatment is crucial and can prevent the disease from developing.

PEP involves:

  • Check iconImmediate wound washing: The wound must be thoroughly flushed with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Check icon  Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG): For severe bites, RIG provides immediate, temporary antibodies to fight the virus.
  • Check icon Rabies vaccine: A series of shots is given over several weeks to stimulate the body's immune system to produce its own long-lasting antibodies.
  • Check icon Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): Vaccination is recommended for individuals at high risk of exposure, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, and travelers to high-risk areas.
  • Check icon No cure: Once rabies symptoms begin, there is no effective treatment, making prevention the only way to ensure survival.

Intramuscular (IM) schedule

This involves administering a 1 ml dose in the upper arm (deltoid) on multiple days.

5-dose schedule: Days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

This is for people at high risk of exposure, such as animal handlers, veterinarians, or travelers to endemic areas.

Schedule: One full dose is administered either intramuscularly or intradermally on days 0, 7, and either 21 or 28.
